Description
adults with disabilities. Studies report that for adults with disabilities after high school: 68% never
attended postsecondary education schools, only 6% had competitive jobs, and 21% had no employment
or education experiences at all, 80% were living with their parents, 40% reported having no friends, and
only 36% had a driver's license. Sadly, 70-80% do not participate in ANY community activities.
We are working to change this by bridging people with disabilities to regular community clubs, jobs and
other opportunities for citizenship. Since September, a small group of young adults have been thinking
about their gifts and how to share them in ways that will make their community better. Some of these
young adults are exploring work and volunteering, others are starting their own clubs or joining existing
community clubs and activities. The learning has been fruitful and the community is better because of
what its’ received. “I’d like to describe that working hard is a very good thing!” says one of our
Protégés who just started a new job.
We invite the community to learn from a few of the protégés who will be telling their stories of
exploration and engagement. This evening of conversations and refreshments will be a celebration of
our work over the last year, as well as an opportunity to gather great ideas, explore untapped resources
and make better connections between individuals with disabilities, their families, and business owners in
the Effingham area. We know there are many people who care about our community and would like to
find ways for everyone to be connected to hopeful opportunities.
The “Community Conversation” is scheduled for May 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church,
213 W. Fayette Ave. This event is open to anyone interested in making our community more
welcoming for all. Business and community leaders, local policymakers, faith communities, school
staff, agencies, families and people with disabilities (high school and beyond) are especially encouraged
to attend. Please join us.
